Coming off the 2020 Legislative Session, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan vetoed HB 732. The bill would have cost Marylanders $250,000,000 for advertising on the internet – during the Covid-19 pandemic, no less – a bad idea at a very bad time. This tax increase was historically shortsighted, foolish, and harmful to countless small businesses and employees – who would ultimately be left to suffer the consequences of the Maryland General Assembly’s recklessness

As the 2021 legislative session kicked in, rumblings of a legislative override of HB 732 swept the state, prompting outcry against the General Assembly.

Starting from scratch, SPM helped to stand up the Marylanders for Tax Fairness Coalition by building a coalition base and robust grassroots army who would be dedicated to fighting against this burdensome and unfair tax increase. Crafting a thoughtful, fully integrated education and awareness effort, our team hit the ground running to raise education and awareness and activate supporters to rail against the digital ad tax.
